UV disinfection principle

UV rays can be divided into UV-A (320-400nm) , UV-B (275-320nm) , UV-C (200-275nm) and vacuum ultraviolet rays according to their biological effects. In water treatment, the UV-C part of ultraviolet rays is actually used. In this band, the ultraviolet rays around 260nm have been proven to have the highest sterilization efficiency.

Guanyu UV sterilizer integrates comprehensive sciences such as optics, microbiology, mechanics, chemistry, electronics, and fluid mechanics. A specially designed high-efficiency, high-intensity, and long-life UV - C light generator is used to generate strong UV- C light to irradiate the flowing water. When bacteria and viruses in the water are exposed to a certain dose of UV- C light (wavelength 253.7nm), their cell DNA and structure are destroyed, and cell regeneration cannot proceed, thereby achieving water disinfection and purification. The spectrum with a wavelength of 185nm can also decompose organic molecules in the water, generate hydrogen radicals, and oxidize organic molecules in the water into carbon dioxide, thereby achieving the purpose of removing TOC.

 

Ultraviolet disinfection has the following advantages:

High efficiency sterilization rate: Ultraviolet rays can generally achieve a sterilization rate of-%--% for bacteria and viruses within one to two seconds.

Broad-spectrum sterilization: The broad-spectrum sterilization of ultraviolet light is the highest at present, and it has a high efficiency in killing almost all bacteria and viruses.

No secondary pollution: UV sterilization does not require the addition of any chemical agents, so it will not cause secondary pollution to the water body and the surrounding environment. It does not change any components in the water.

Safety and environmental protection: Traditional disinfection technologies such as chloride or ozone use highly toxic and flammable substances. However, there is no such safety hazard in the ultraviolet disinfection system.

Low cost: Ultraviolet disinfection equipment has the advantages of small footprint, easy installation, low operating cost and small total investment. The operating cost is 1/2 of chlorine disinfection.

Factors Affecting the Sterilization Effect of Ultraviolet Light

Ultraviolet transmittance (UVT)

The important factors that affect the UV sterilization effect are the UV transmittance of the sterilization medium (water) or the medium absorptivity (absorbance). The UV transmittance and the medium absorptivity are affected by factors such as dissolved organic matter, inorganic matter and undissolved suspended matter in the water.

Total suspended particulate matter (TSS)

The effect of suspended particles on the sterilization effect of ultraviolet rays is also very obvious. Suspended particles can absorb and reflect ultraviolet rays, thereby preventing ultraviolet rays from irradiating the DNA of bacteria and viruses. In addition, suspended particles will also accelerate the scaling and contamination of the quartz sleeve, thereby affecting the sterilization effect.

Particle size

The size of particles in the water has a great influence on the effect of UV sterilization, because large suspended particles will form shadows and dead corners for the protection of bacteria and viruses. Usually the effluent from the secondary sedimentation tank is more conducive to UV sterilization, and the average size of suspended particles in the water should be less than 30um.

Exposure time

Exposure time is related to flow rate. When designing a UV system, it is usually designed according to the peak direct flow rate. The smaller the flow rate, the longer the exposure time, and the greater the effective dose of the system.
